Light of Literacy Award and Proclomation

WICOMICO COUNTY, Maryland - This past Sunday, the Salisbury Jaycees were a proud part of the Great Clue Caper 4. The Great Clue Caper is an annual race across Wicomico County for 50+ teams of two to five people solving puzzles. The race is three hours long and contained within the boundaries of Wicomico County. This year clue sites included Leonard's Mill Pond, WSCL, Whitehaven Church and Cedar Hill Marina.

This community event event raised nearly forty thousand dollars this year for the Village of Hope Charity which helps clients with transitional housing and medical care.

The Jaycees fielded two teams, A-Team and Plan B and placed 4th and 18th respectively. Several members current and former members could be seen on other clue caper teams such as the 15th place "Women are from Venus" team from PKS & Company and the Best Dressed "Pirate Crew of Honey Badgers" team. The Jaycees A-Team has placed in the top five for three consecutive years.

In addition to participating in events like this one, the Salisbury Jaycees host a number of fun events too! Anyone ages 18-40 is welcome to join the Salisbury Jaycees, and you don't have to live or work in Salisbury! We have members from Laurel and Millsboro, Delaware; and Easton and Berlin, Maryland.  Jaycees Membership Meetings are 6:30pm on the third Monday of each month at the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce. Stop by and say Hello!

Light of Literacy Award and Proclomation

SALISBURY, Maryland - The Salisbury Jaycees were recognized at the first annual Light of Literacy Awards as the Non-Profit Organization Luminary. The breakfast celebration was held on Thursday, April 11, 2013 from 8:00 to 10:00 am at the Fountains in Salisbury, Maryland.

This community event, presented by the Friends of the Wicomico Public Library, recognizes seven leaders who are literacy luminaries in our community, lighting the way for others by their example and whose efforts demonstrate their deep understanding of the transformational power of literacy.

The Salisbury Maryland Jaycees were represented at the breakfast by Miss Amanda Mitchell, Ashley Stern Altvater, Christan McIntyre, Emily Nock and Jessica Kling. Other nominees in the same category were The Glory of Zion Church, Tales for Dogs, United way of the Lower Eastern Shore and The Village of Hope.

As a leader in literacy, the Wicomico Public Library understands the crucial role that literacy skills play in empowering individuals to succeed. Through the National Read Across America movement, the Salisbury Jaycees are able to dedicate programming to bettering the lives of young people in Salisbury promoting the role literacy plays in future success.

In addition to community service projects, the Salisbury Jaycees offer young people unique opportunities to develop leadership skills outside of the workplace. Jaycees Meetings are the third Monday at the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce.

SALISBURY, Maryland - The Salisbury Maryland Jaycees held a social dinner event at 6:30pm on Thursday February 21 at Vinny's La Roma at 934 South Salisbury Blvd. Salisbury, MD 21801.

The event provides an opportunity for members and prospective members of the Jaycees to socialize in a less formal setting than a regular membership meeting or project. The event is also an opportunity to "EAT LOCAL" and support a member of LORA , the Local Owner Restaurant Association.

The Jaycees were welcomed by the owner himself, Vinny as seen in the photo above with several current members of the Salisbury Jaycees.  Also seen in the phone is Matthew A. Maciarello, the State's Attorney of Wicomico County, Maryland who was also dining at Vinny's La Roma on Thursday evening and stopped by the table.

Established in the 1940s, the  Salisbury Jaycees offer people between the ages of 18 and 40 unique opportunities to develop leadership skills they can use elsewhere in life. Additional information about the Jaycees is available at www.salisburyjc.com

Santa Claus travels around the world in a single night. It took Gansu Song and Dance Theatre a little longer.

The Chinese troupe recently performed the award-winning show Silk Road, Flower Rain for a packed house at Salisbury University, courtesy of World Artist Experiences, Inc. Because Santa is not as well known in their native country as he is in the United States, SU’s Office of Cultural Affairs called on the Salisbury Jaycees to arrange a personal backstage visit.

Imagine waking up as a child on Christmas… and not receiving any presents. That could be a reality for some area children without the help of the Salisbury Jaycees.

Each year, the chapter takes some 200 underprivileged kids holiday shopping during the Children’s Christmas Shopping Tour, thanks to funds raised by the Salisbury Jaycees Foundation. Participating children are recommended by their school guidance counselors. Nearly 200 volunteers from Salisbury University, the Salisbury Baptist Temple and other community institutions and organizations recently helped make the 39th installment of this event possible.
